Training & Handling

How our detection teams are trained

At ATC K-9 Detection, accuracy starts with training. Our bed bug detection K-9 is sourced through IronHeart Dog Training, a professional working-dog training company with decades of experience in scent detection, police K-9s, protection dogs, and pest-control detection dogs. IronHeart’s bed bug detection program is built around real-world search conditions, disciplined scent work, and a strong final response at the source of the odor. Their training uses actual bed bugs in varying quantities and presentations, helping prepare the dog for the types of environments commonly found in homes, apartments, hotels, offices, and commercial properties. Just as important, handler training is part of the process. Proper leash handling, scent behavior, search patterns, training maintenance, record keeping, and avoiding common handler mistakes all play a major role in producing a reliable K-9 inspection team. For ATC, this means our K-9 detection program is not a gimmick. It is a professional tool designed to help locate bed bug activity faster, narrow down treatment areas, and give customers clearer answers when they are dealing with one of the most stressful pest problems there is. When combined with ATC Pest Control’s bed bug experience and treatment options, our K-9 detection service gives customers a smarter way to inspect, verify, and respond.

Step 01

Scent imprinting & detection

Our K9s are imprinted on the specific scent of live bed bugs and viable eggs, then proofed against distractor odors so alerts are precise and trustworthy.

Step 02

Handler certification

Handlers train to read their dog, document alerts, and run methodical sweep patterns — ensuring consistent, repeatable results on every job.

Step 03

Ongoing maintenance training

Detection skills are perishable. Our teams run regular maintenance drills and blind tests to keep accuracy sharp year-round.
